Beating the Winter Cycling Blues
Winter is not the ideal time to get out on your bike but barring hell and high water the benefits of empty bike racks at key points around the town and avoiding parking problems and charges mean there’s still plenty of reasons to break out the wheels and get pedalling!
As always, and especially as the light goes earlier and earlier, the most important thing is to be safe. Follow these tips and you increase your chances of making it through winter with a healthier heart and a fatter wallet!
- Be safe, be seen. The absolute golden rule of riding, anywhere, especially when it’s dark by the time you leave the office. You don’t need lights like searchlights, but fork out enough to get a decent set to make sure you are clearly seen! Modern LED lights are small, light and bright. Pay attention to the mount and the weight of the light, as after a while bumps will wreck weak mountings. A British Standard mark set will set you back around £20, but remember you will probably save on transport and parking.
Top tip - make sure the rear light won’t be obscured by coats, bags, mudguards etc.
- Get a high visibility jacket. Lights help, but forget about fashion and make sure your clothes are bight and reflective. Most shops sell reflective armbands and similar items – every little helps, but the best is a hi-viz vest or jacket. Professional hi-viz vests can be expensive but the ones down M.A.S.H. cost about a fiver. The vests can go over whatever you are wearing, and roll up into a pocket or bag when you reach your destination. Cheap, bright lightweight coats are sold in Sports Direct.
Top tip – if you wear a backpack you are probably covering most of your hi-viz vest. Reflective bag covers can help.
- Mudguards and old shoes – The downside of living in a green and pleasant land is that rain never seems far away, at this time of year. A light waterproof is a good start. Remember roads will stay wet long after the rain has stopped – mudguards are easy to fit and help keep you dry, getting you to places without a wet line running up your back.
Top tip – Shoes and gaiters or old trousers you don’t mind getting wet area a good idea, Mudguards aren’t ‘keep-me-dry’ miracles!
- Look after your bike – Bikes generally don’t need much maintenance, especially if you are not putting in miles and miles. Keep your brakes well adjusted and responsive. With all the moisture in the air certain parts, usually the chain, may start to rust. Some decent chain lubricant will stop this and extend the life of your chain. It only costs a few quid, and a thin film will avoid picking up dirt and is enough help keep rust at bay.
Top tip – Home-mechanics favourite WD40 is good for driving out water from soaking chain links, but is not a good lubricant for chains!
If you are unsure how to service your bike take it to a qualified bike mechanic in a shop rather than take the risk on the road.

Following on from yesterday’s post about the Shepway Cycling Plan, it was adopted last night. We now look forward to the improvements that it will bring for cyclists across the whole of Shepway district. Well done to everybody that campaigned to see its introduction, with particular congratulations to the Shepway Cycle Forum.

The councillors that sit on Shepway’s Joint Transportation Board will decide whether to approve Shepway’s Cycle Plan tonight. The plan has been in the making for several years. Shepway Cycle Forum and Spokes have been involved with much of the consultation on the document and have been campaigning for its introduction for quite some time. The introduction of the plan will allow developments within the district to be judged assessed against the plan for how they contribute to its policies. This means, for example, that new developments should provide cycle parking provision and, if of sufficient scale, cycle paths.
The final draft document can be found in the meeting’s agenda:

We look forward to a positive decision tonight.

Members of Shepway Cycle Forum had encouraging meetings with Conservative candidate Damian Collins and Lib/Dem candidate Lynne Beaumont in the run up to the General Election. Both pledged support for the forum, particularly in the protracted ongoing consultations with Kent Highway Services over a cycling strategy for Shepway.
With Damian Collins now installed as the new MP for Folkestone and Hythe, the forum looks forward to some heavyweight political clout in the campaign to raise the profile and facilities for cycling in Shepway. Meanwhile, Lynne Beaumont, who took a spin on bike on Sandgate seafront after her meeting, proved helpful in identifying local politicians with cycling sympathies.
The venue for both meetings was kindly supplied by the newly opened cycle and coffee shop The Hub in Sandgate High Street.
