The Crab & Winkle Way bridges, which enable the popular cycling and walking route to extend through to Whitstable harbour, have just been granted planning permission.

Kingfisher Way improved cattle grids

Spokes are pleased to see that improved cattle grids are now being installed on the new Kingfisher Way cycle route between Canterbury and Chartham. This follows Spokes complaining to both Kent Highway Services and Canterbury City Council about the previous “pointed” cattle grids, which could easily cause damage to bicycles.

(Note that since this post was first made the route has now been officially called the Great Stour Way, instead of the Kingfisher Way)

Crab and Winkle bridges planning application delayed

Last night’s Development Control Committee in Canterbury’s Guildhall decided to hold a site inspection in relation to the proposed Crab & Winkle Way bridges in Whitstable. This means that the planning application will be decided at the Development Control Committee meeting following the inspection, i.e. 8th March 2011 at 18:30. This is an unfortunate setback, but we’re still looking forward to seeing the planning application granted in a month’s time.

Crab & Winkle Way resurfacing

Spokes is pleased to see that a portion of the Crab & Winkle Way cycle route between the Sarre Penn stream and Tyler Hill Road is now being surfaced with tarmac. This is a vast improvement to, more comfortable, and ultimately safer than the broken surface that was in place before. Our thanks go to Kent Highway Services for the work.

Shepway Cycling Plan out for public consultation

Kent County Council and Kent Highway Services have put Shepway Cycling Plan out for public consultation. Shepway Cycle Forum have been campaigning for a cycling strategy for a number of years. We encourage you to make your representation to the plan.

Shepway Cycle Forum meet parliamentary contenders

Members of Shepway Cycle Forum had encouraging meetings with Conservative candidate Damian Collins and Lib/Dem candidate Lynne Beaumont in the run up to the General Election. Both pledged support for the forum, particularly in the protracted ongoing consultations with Kent Highway Services over a cycling strategy for Shepway.

With Damian Collins now installed as the new MP for Folkestone and Hythe, the forum looks forward to some heavyweight political clout in the campaign to raise the profile and facilities for cycling in Shepway. Meanwhile, Lynne Beaumont, who took a spin on bike on Sandgate seafront after her meeting, proved helpful in identifying local politicians with cycling sympathies.

The venue for both meetings was kindly supplied by the newly opened cycle and coffee shop The Hub in Sandgate High Street.

Swale Cycle Forum

A new Swale Cycle Forum is being formed. Spokes participate in a number of cycle forums, which engage members of the public, local and county authorities, businesses, etc. to further develop and promote cycling. Objectives of the new Swale Cycle Forum will include the creation of a Swale Cycling Strategy and proposing new cycle routes and parking. The forum’s first meeting will be on May 27th. New cycle path in Sittingbourne

Kent Highway Services have submitted a planning application for the creation of a short section of cycle path within Sittingbourne. This will form part of a larger scheme to convert existing paths to allow cycling as well as walking. Once complete it will benefit South Avenue Infants, South Avenue Junior, and Borden Grammar schools. Crab & Winkle Way bridge consultation, Whitstable

Kent County Council and Kent Highway Services are currently consulting on the proposed cycle and pedestrian bridges on the Crab & Winkle Way that will form part of the northern extension of this popular route into Whitstable. Comments are welcomed by 26th March.

Pyson’s Road cycle and pedestrian improvements

Kent Highway Services are currently consulting on a new pedestrian and cycle safety scheme along Pyson’s Road in Thanet. The plans are to increase the side of the pedestrian / cycle crossing islands, widen the cycle / foot paths, and install a couple of bollards to prevent parking on the cycle path. Comments from the public are requested by 23rd April. Here’s a map of the current facilities.
