Canterbury to Chartham riverside cycle route construction continues

Spokes are pleased to see that the Canterbury to Chartham riverside cycle route construction resumed at the Canterbury end. It is envisaged that the route will soon connect to Tonford Lane before continuing to the newly widened path beside Chartham village hall. Once complete this route will form part of National Cycle Route 18.

I really enjoyed the wonderful off road cycle route from Chartham to canterbury and back. Took the train from wye to Chartham, cycled in to canterbury had a cup of tea and cycled back then caught the next train home! what a joy No traffic,no jostling with cars. and lots of other cyclists and walkers of all ages enjoying the peace and quiet.
A big big thank you Sustrans for all your hard work.
How about extending it to ashford?

  2. We’re glad you enjoyed the route so much. The campaigning for this route was carried out by ourselves.

We’re already working on plans for another lengthy traffic-free section of cycle route from near the other side of Chartham towards Godmersham. That will help add more traffic-free route in the Ashford direction.

In the meantime you may have noticed that National Cycle Route 18, which the Great Stour Way you cycled is part of, extends to Ashford via quiet roads. After Ashford it uses more quiet roads to reach Tenterden and Royal Tunbridge Wells.

Take a look at this map to see the full alignment of NCR18 together with the proposed route mentioned above:
